Made With Canola Oil logo
With all of the public discussion of "good"
versus "bad" fats, consumer education is crucial. To raise
consumer awareness of canola oil and foods that contain it, CanolaInfo,
an information resource about canola oil, has developed a "Made
with Canola Oil" logo for food manufacturers using the oil.

"As food makers strive to remove trans fat from
their products, the use and promotion of canola oil is increasing,"
said Robert Hunter, assistant vice president, CanolaInfo. "Food
companies that are using or have switched to canola oil often want to
market this fact. The "Made With Canola Oil" logo will
give them official bragging rights."
He says the logo is "a bright, clear symbol
that will tell consumers they've chosen a food product with good fats."
CanolaInfo will promote the logo's meaning to consumers via the media
as well as to product developers and health professionals.
In October 2006, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration
authorized a qualified health claim1 for canola oil due to its ability
to reduce the risk of coronary heart disease. Canola oil has the lowest
amount (7%) of saturated fat of any common culinary oil and zero trans
fat and cholesterol. It is also a good source of vitamin E.
Given this healthy profile, canola oil is a natural
replacement for partially hydrogenated oils, which are the primary source
of trans fat in North America. High-oleic or high-stability canola oil "with a minimum of 65% oleic acid" is particularly well
suited to the food service industry as it also offers functional characteristics
that allow for extended fry life (300+ fryings*), higher heat tolerance
and cost efficiencies.
The "Made with Canola Oil" logo will be
available to food makers using canola oil through a complimentary licensing
agreement with CanolaInfo. For information about licensing, go to www.canolainfo.org.
F.A.Q. for Industry: New "Made With Canola Oil"
Logo Denotes Zero Trans, Low Saturated Fat Products
What's driving the new "made with canola
oil" logo?
Fat is no longer a bad word as long as it's a good fat! Unsaturated
fats are good fats. Health experts now recommend a diet that includes
good fats in moderation. But how's a confused consumer supposed
to know what to choose? The new "made with canola oil" logo
on food products will make it clear. It's an unforgettable image
that stands for a healthy, trans-free oil that is also low in saturated
fat.
Why use canola oil?
Because it's a healthy choice for your business. Canola oil is
largely comprised of monounsaturated fat with the lowest amount (7%)
of saturated fat of any common culinary oil. It received a qualified
health claim from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration on its ability
to reduce the risk of coronary heart disease due to its unsaturated
fat content.1 Canola oil has no trans fat or cholesterol. It is also
a good source of vitamin E.
How does a food product qualify to use the new
logo?
To use the "made with canola oil" logo, a product must meet
the following criteria:
- The oil used in it must be 100 percent pure canola
oil, not a blend.
- The product must be low in saturated fat (1 g or
less per serving in the U.S.; 2 g or less of saturated and trans fats
combined per serving in Canada).
- The product must contain zero grams (less than
0.5 g in the U.S. or 0.2 g in Canada) of trans fat per serving.
How much does it cost to license the logo?
There's an annual fee of $250. But if you're a member of
the Canola Council of Canada (www.canola-council.org), it's free.
You can become an Affiliate Member of the Council for an annual fee
of $267.50. There's an online logo licensing form at www.canolainfo.org.
How will consumers recognize the new logo?
CanolaInfo is implementing a major promotional campaign with the media
and influencer groups so they can spread the word to consumers about
the new canola oil logo. Consumers are already aware of canola oil.
Now they'll know what products are made with it.
