Story Posted: February 06, 2007 Canada's New Food guide includes Canola Oil for Eating Well Source: Health Canada, Category: Health & Nutrition Canada's revised Food Guide, released this week by Health Canada, acknowledges and celebrates the essential role good fats and oils play in the diet. And - the Guide recommends canola oil as one of the best oil choices because of its high percentage of unsaturated fat. Canola oil is the lowest in saturated fat of all commercially available fats and oils and has zero trans fats. It provides the best nutritional balance of all popular cooking oils and contains high levels of heart-healthy monounsaturated fats. Canola Council of Canada president Barb Isman points out that in early October this past year, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) authorized a qualified health claim for canola oil based on the relationship of its high level of unsaturated fats to the reduction of cardiovascular disease. And she says, "There's news every day of restaurants such as KFC Canada, Taco Bell in North America and McDonald's in the U.S., switching to canola oil for healthy trans fat-free cooking." Isman says the canola industry is "committed to providing a consistent, reliable supply of canola oil to help Canadians eat well. We're very pleased that Health Canada is spreading the good word."
