Meet the Guidelines

On Jan. 7, the U.S. Departments of Agriculture and Health and Human Services issued the Dietary Guidelines for Americans 2015-2020, which specifically calls for limiting calories from saturated fat. “By replacing sources of saturated fat in the diet, canola oil can help meet this recommendation,” writes the U.S. Canola Association on its blog. According to the guidelines, explains The Washington Post, less than 10 percent of daily calories should come from saturated fat and canola oil is a suggested substitute. In the Huffington Post, registered dietitian Julie Upton also highlights the recommendation to use canola oil among vegetable oils as it contains “the lowest amounts of saturated fat.”  Dr. Jo Lichten, registered dietitian, goes further: “Stop buying ‘vegetable’ oil – even if the recipe calls for it … If you look at the list of ingredients you'll find out that your vegetable oil is probably from soy, an oil with a high polyunsaturated fat content. Olive and canola oils are high in monounsaturated fats – just substitute them for any recipe calling for vegetable oil.”
