Canola Oil Poised to Help Meet Consumer Demand for Omega-3s

American consumers recognize the lack of omega-3 fatty acids in their diet more readily than they acknowledge being deficient in any other nutrient, according to a 2008 study by the Natural Marketing Institute. Another study found that 38 percent of shoppers reported increasing their omega-3 intake, a number that has jumped three-fold in the last 10 years. Monsanto is developing a canola oil containing stearidonic acid, which can be readily converted in the body to EPA, a beneficial omega-3. Martek and Dow AgroSciences plan to use a gene from Martek’s microalgae to produce canola oil rich in DHA, another omega-3 with a range of promising health benefits.
