Healthy Fats Ensure Your Salad is Best Dressed

In order to get the most nutrients out of your salad, skip fat-free dressings and opt for heart-healthy canola oil-based dressings. The Globe and Mail’s dietitian Leslie Beck explained that “oil in salad dressings helps the body absorb beta-carotene, lycopene and lutein, beneficial phytochemicals in salad greens.” Although many salad dressings are made with unsaturated vegetable oils, she says “salad dressings made with canola oil are a good choice because they contain alpha-linolenic acid, an omega-3 fat that may protect [against] heart disease.”
