Even with a relatively healthy diet and plenty of exercise, controlling belly fat can be a challenge, especially as we age, says Katherine Brooking, M.S., R.D., in a WebMD article. She suggests focusing on four key nutrients for keeping fat accumulation from focusing on your middle: fiber, probiotics, vitamin D and monounsaturated fat. Regarding the latter, Brooking explains, studies show that replacing saturated fat with monounsaturated fat can help reduce and even prevent belly fat. Plant-based sources of monounsaturated fat include canola oil.
