Fad or Fact?

Is coconut oil healthy or a passing fad? When asked about his food “unfaves” by People magazine, celebrity trainer and nutrition expert, Harley Pasternak challenges the health claims of coconut oil by posing a crucial question – is it backed by research? Instead Pastnerak recommends using canola oil for its heart healthy monounsaturated fats.

Clinical nutritionist Kavita Poddar addresses claims of coconut oil on Health Canal, stating that it is a popular fad, but is very high in saturated fat. She suggests using oils low in saturated fats, like canola oil, for heart-healthy benefits. “There is no scientific evidence to suggest that coconut oil is better for you than other oils with lower amounts of saturated fats,” Poddar states.
